EPA issues PFC-destruction challenge

EPA researchers and staff are harnessing the power of crowdsourcing to identify ways to destroy PFAS through non-incineration methods,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “The Trump Administration has offered major assistance to more than 30 states across the U.S. to protect human health regarding PFAS, and the agency is offering up to $50,000 for the best design concept to safely destroy the chemical.

Shaheen, Carper & Schumer Introduce Landmark Legislation to Fund PFAS Cleanup

Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced legislation with Senators Tom Carper (D-DE) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to help communities combat per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination and exposure in drinking water and groundwater. The Providing Financial Assistance to States (PFAS) for Testing and Treatment Act would provide substantial federal funding for PFAS remediation in drinking water, and groundwater, including private wells.

EPA Proposes federal limit on 2 PFAS compounds

The proposed “regulatory determination” unveiled by the agency today is the initial step in a yearslong process of setting a mandatory drinking water limit for the chemicals PFOA and PFOS. It comes as many states, frustrated with EPA’s slow pace, have begun work to enact their own drinking water limits for those two substances and sometimes others in the same chemical family.
“The U.S. leads the world in providing access to safe drinking water for its citizens, thanks in part to EPA’s implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act,” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a statement. Wheeler last year promised to issue the determination as he sought Senate confirmation for his post.

CA Water Board Updates Guidelines for Testing and Reporting PFOA and PFOS

While the State Water Board continues to assess the scope of contamination based on initial data reporting from the statewide assessment, the response levels for PFOA and PFOS remain at 70 parts per trillion for the total combined concentration of both contaminants, consistent with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s health advisory level. The response levels will be updated in the fall. POU and POE treatment solutions will be critical in providing fast and affordable protection to Californians.
