Shaheen, Carper & Schumer Introduce Landmark Legislation to Fund PFAS Cleanup

Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced legislation with Senators Tom Carper (D-DE) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to help communities combat per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination and exposure in drinking water and groundwater. The Providing Financial Assistance to States (PFAS) for Testing and Treatment Act would provide substantial federal funding for PFAS remediation in drinking water, and groundwater, including private wells.

Global Water Complications

Globally, we haven’t done the best job in protecting of resources. Humanity has an almost limitless potential to innovate and we need to spend our energy and efforts in responsibly harmonizing with our natural world while cleaning the mess we’ve already made.  Until we figure out how to progress without negative consequences, we must assume that all waters will be contaminated to some extent with numerous contaminants. It just makes sense to filter and purify all waters that we drink, work with, and play with.

Studies have found PFOA and PFOS in the blood samples of the general human population and wildlife nationwide. Studies also indicate that continued exposure to low levels of PFOA in drinking water may result in adverse health effects. These chemicals bioaccumulate in living organisms compounding the exposure and potential impacts on human health.

The tip of the Iceberg

The true nature of the effects of these emerging contaminants on our health is largely unknown, since some of them are so difficult to test for, and there are many interfering factors. Since multiple, continuous sources of exposure to these contaminants exist in the environment, it will continue to be very difficult to define true causal relationships, so the safest path is to avoid ingestion, especially through drinking water.
