The educational platform for this convention has been developed around  “sustainability.”

Nothing could be more timely and appropriate than to be well informed on the “Where are we?  Where are we going? And how are we going to get there?” as it applies to water usage and conservation in times of drought.  Sustainability is the “art” of knowing what to do today in order to survive tomorrow.  Our education topics this year will help us to appreciate how to use less and reuse more in order to stretch our resources.  Use less water, use less salt, use less energy.

Thursday, October 2, 2014

8 am – 9 am: Are We Running Out of Water?
Presented by Chubb Michaud CWS-VI, Systematix Company
Where does our  local water come from and how is it used?  Are we really in danger of running out of water?  What are the biggest concerns about our water supply?  Residential water usage only accounts for about 1% of  the water supply while agricultural needs are as much as 90%. Chubb will look at how water is used and how much is necessary to sustain our needs for growth and sustainability. How does California stack up against other states in water usage and requirements?

9 am – 10 am: Conserving Water Without Inconvenience
Presented by Greg Reyneke  CWS-VI, Red Fox Advisors
It’s cool to conserve.  Optimizing water treatment equipment efficiency and first tier water reuse options are the keys to minimizing your hydrologic footprint.    Greg will review numerous water saving  facts and techniques and present some real world examples with a detailed data analysis on water reuse and discuss the regulations and best practices.  This is good information you can use to both keep your customers informed and increase your business. Being water wise is just plain smart.

10 am – 11 am: Variable Frequency Drive Pumps
Presented by Clifford Fasnacht CWS-VI, Pacific Purification, Inc.
Variable frequency drive (VFD) pumps are an integral part of many water treatment systems today.  Why  is that so important?  What are they and how do they work?  Are they right for you?  How will they save your customer money and make you money at the same time?  Cliff will describe their importance for specific applications and cover the potential energy savings.  It’s all a part of sustainability.

11:00 am – noon: Softener efficiency: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Presented by Michael Mecca, Performance Water Products

Water softeners have been with us for over 100 years. Today’s ultra-high efficiency systems are leading the way for reduced brine discharge and water use reduction.  Mike will discuss the history and the impact of continuously improving salt efficiency all the way from the “salt in head” models of the early 1900s to the ultimate “zero discharge” trends of the future. Lowering the brine discharge numbers makes reclaimed water more usable and contributes to sustainability.

Each year Pacific Water Quality Association hosts an Annual Meeting during the convention. This year the meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 1st from 4 – 5:30 pm at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center. Banquet Dinner and Industry Awards

The 2014 Banquet Dinner and Industry Awards will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 starting at 6:30 pm. The evening’s agenda includes a great meal, presentation of several well deserved industry awards and entertainment by the talented Joe Valeri. Take over twenty years’ experience as a musician in New York City, multi-instrumental skills, and a repertoire of literally  thousands  of songs, and you’ve got the musical tour-de-force that is Joe Valeri.

Joe has an extraordinary talent for transcribing music by ear.  He knows the songs you want to hear! In the unlikely event you want to hear something he doesn’t know, he’ll learn it in five minutes.  Unbelievable?  Dare him!

Joe performed in  NYC Dueling Pianos  in the heart of Times Square for the past 10 years and served as its Musical Director until 2012 when he relocated to Southern California.  He was also the Musical Director for several stage productions including  Growing Up 70’s  featuring Barry Williams (off-Broadway).

Joe has worked with such luminaries in the New York scene as Mark Rivera, Cameron Brown, Nicki Parrott, and Rod Ruth. Although he is a renowned veteran in the world of Dueling Pianos, he is also a professional solo pianist, drummer, and electric bassist.

This event is a great opportunity to mingle in an enjoyable social setting. This event will have a non-hosted cash bar. Paid registration is required.

Opportunity Raffle / Casino Night Reception

PWQA is hosting an opportunity raffle. All  raffle items will be on display on the trade show floor on Thursday and the raffle will conclude at the end of the Casino Night Reception.    At the conclusion of the trade show  Thursday at 5:30 pm, please join us in the foyer of the exhibit hall for a free Casino Night Reception including craps, blackjack and roulette gaming tables.  Each guest will be given “funny money” that can be exchanged for chips.  Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and mingle at the gaming tables with your colleagues from the water improvement industry.  At the end of the event, chips will be exchanged for raffle tickets and several lucky winners will go away with a great prize.  This event will have a non-hosted cash bar.

We are actively seeking raffle items and prizes for the casino night raffle. If you would like to donate an item for the 2014 opportunity raffle or a prize for the casino night raffle prize, please email the association office at info@pwqa.org so we can arrange to receive it. Examples of popular items we have had in the past  include wine baskets, sports memorabilia, specialty liquors,  DVD collections, jewelry, gift cards and electronic gadgets.

WQA CWS Test Preparation Course

This exam prep course is a review of the material from the CWS exam study kit. For best results, close reading of all the kit books and materials is strongly recommended prior to attending the course. Course attendance without prior study does not ensure exam success. We will be covering highlights on water contaminants, their origins, chemistries, and treatment technologies.

Modular Education Program (MEP): Getting Started & Basics Badge 1A

Using the NEW Modular Education Program (MEP) online software, attendees will complete a set of learning activities required to earn the Water Quality Basics Badge, the first course in the new education program. This introductory badge addresses basic principles and concepts of water quality and water analysis. It’s a great way to start off new hires and is intended for anyone likely to interact with customers, including office and non-technical support personnel.

*WQA Presents: CWS Test Prep Course, Modular Education Program (MEP) and
Certification Exams are independent of PWQA registration.
