A new state law, which will allow for third-party certification of water treatment products in California, will take effect on Jan. 4, 2014. Since the passage of California’s Assembly Bill 119, product certification agencies, including WQA, have been assisting the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in developing an implementation process for the new law. With the effective date only weeks away, WQA is awaiting a communication from CDPH with details of the new submission process.

WQA has facilitated several discussions with CDPH and NSF in recent months, seeking answers to commonly asked member questions related to policies and practices. Through the discussions it is apparent that CDPH is intending for the submission to include three main components:

(1)  An application in similar format to the current renewal form;

(2)  A fee; and

(3)  A document-such as a performance data sheet–listing the main product requirements indicated in the law.
