2015 Scholarship Recipients

The PWQA Member Company $1000 Scholarship is awarded to an individual who is employed by a PWQA member company or is related to an individual that is employed by a PWQA member company.   This year, PWQA is happy to award it to Sarah Stevenson, daughter of Kim Stevenson, an employee of Hall’s Culligan Water in Wichita, Kansas who works in Corporate Accounts Receivable.  Sarah distinguished herself amongst the other applicants in several ways:  While still in high school, Sarah started her college career completing over 11 units prior to her high school graduation.  Now a sophomore at Kansas State University majoring in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering she continues to achieve academic excellence.  Currently enrolled full time she also works as an undergraduate research assistant in the Kansas State University – SMART Laboratory.    Both on campus and off Sarah is a leader.  Her special interest is radiation detection, diversity and inclusion and the military.  Other organizations Sarah is involved in are:  Air Force ROTC, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, KSU Women in Engineering, College of Engineering Student Ambassador and the Kansas State University Honors Program.  PWQA is not the only one impressed with Sarah’s hard work and involvement.  Other awards and recognition she has received have been the second place at KSU Undergraduate Research Forum, Commendation Award, Academic Honors Award, Achievement Award, Academic Gold Star, Cadet of the Semester, Honor Roll and Army RANGER Challenger Coin.  Congratulations to Sarah and we wish her all the best as she continues her education.

 

The PWQA Major Related to Potable Water Quality $1000 Scholarship is awarded to an individual that is pursuing a major of study relevant to the water improvement industry.  Out of several applications, the scholarship committee has chosen Zena Taraprewalla as the 2015 recipient.  Zena is a sophomore at UCLA majoring in Psychobiology with a Public Health minor.  Her excellence has been noted.  Zena is on the UCLA Dean’s List, she is a UCLA Alumni Scholar Award Recipient and has earned several Girl Scout awards including the Bronze, Silver and Gold Girl Scout Awards along with the Girl Scout Community Service Award.   Zena’s future plans include medical school where she hopes to become a physician.  She has a special interest in participating in a group like Doctors without Borders where she hopes to travel to areas less fortunate.  Having immigrated to the US from a third world country, she has seen the dangers and illnesses that arise from lack of proper health care as well as lack of good, clean water.  It is Zena’s wish that through the advancement of technology in science, she will be able to learn about the promotion of healthier societies.  When not on campus at UCLA working on her Bachelor degree, Zena enjoys tutoring students at Kumon.   Other hobbies and interest include cooking, running, playing the clarinet, reading and watching the latest movies in the theater with family and friends.  Congratulations to Zena and we wish her all the best as she continues her education.
